Start with Basics

The Kidneys are 2 bean shaped organs located in the back of your abdomen, each abou the size of a Fist.

Despite being this small, the Kidneys are vital for our overall wellbeing and physical health.

The 2 most important functions of Kidneys are :

  • Filtering Blood

  • Producing Urine.

Beyond removing waste products from the body, the Kidneys play crucial role in maintaining our overall health.

- Regulate Blood Pressure by maintaining Fluid balance in our body

- Produce Hormones such as Erythropoietin, Renin, and Calcitriol, that influence production of Red Blood Cells (RBCs) and maintaining Bone health

- Regulate Electrolytes such as Sodium (Na), Potassium (K), Calcium (Ca) and Phosphorus (P), which are essential for Nerve and Muscle function.

The Kidneys achieve all these functions through Millions of tiny tubular structures called Nephrons.

A healthy kidney measures about 10-12 cms in length, 5-7 cms in width, and 2-3 cms in thickness.

With ageing, Kidneys automatically shrink in size with corresponding death of Nephrons. Even then, the Kidneys pack enough punch to take care of the vital functions and ancillary functions for overall wellbeing.

A diseased kidney will have lost nephrons at an accelerated pace and thus appear much smaller in size through Ultrasonic Scans or other radiological scans.

It may have scarring or hardness at some areas, and may even have tumors or cysts.

Dysfunction of Kidneys can lead to various health problems including Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), Kidney Stones, and Urinary tract infections (UTI).

A diseased kidney will fail to maintain your blood pressure close to the nominal level, may lead to fluid buildup in body, may cause your arteries to harden due to buildup of toxins in blood, and ultimately lead to malfunction of several vital organs including the Heart.
